High-protein summer blend with added greens and calcium for backyard flocks
Summer nutrition for productive backyard flocks
Our 19% Backyard Layer Blend is a seasonal mash crafted to help your flock thrive in the heat. This high-protein feed combines two of our most popular formulas—Gallo Pro and 24% Poultry Grower—to deliver optimal energy, balanced nutrition, and rich egg yolks. We’ve also added non-GMO Utah alfalfa meal for natural greens and aragonite calcium to support shell strength. It’s a smart blend for small flocks with limited foraging space during the summer months.
Quality feed. Great prices and fast delivery.
My chickens just a small flock, they love the summer layer blend! They eat it so well that we have minimal waste.
19% Backyard Summer Layer Blend
My chickens love the new summer blend! They just started laying so we switched over and it’s helped them start laying more consistently. Definitely will keep buying this for them!
Thanks Alison. We are go glad to hear that. We truly appricate your support!
My chickens love the Backyard Layer Summer Blend from Leland Mills and it is a great price!
I love the smell of Leland Mills products! My chickens seem to like the new blend, although I am introducing it slowly. Ordering and delivery are super easy and reliable!
I’ll start by saying I’ve never been a fan of mash because it always seemed messy and wasteful, so I’ve stuck with pellets for years. This past winter, though, I really wanted to try the Winter Blend, so I decided to give it a shot. To my surprise, it went really well—and I realized the key difference this time is that I’m using an enclosed feeder from RentACoop, which virtually eliminates waste.
The Winter Blend worked out so well that I decided to try the Summer Blend, and I’ve now gone through multiple bags. I pair it with Gallo Pro as scratch—it’s full of grains my chickens love but also has a more complete nutritional profile, which helps it stretch further despite being a bit more expensive on its own.
My chickens love it, there’s no wasted mash on the ground, and I’m consistently getting beautiful eggs from all of my hens.
The only minor issue I’ve run into is that sometimes the feed settles unevenly and doesn’t drop down on its own, so I have to give the feeder a little bump to get things moving. But that’s a small tradeoff for how well this setup has worked overall.
If you’ve been hesitant to try mash for the same reasons I used to avoid it, I’d definitely recommend getting an enclosed feeder and giving it a try—you might be as pleasantly surprised as I was.
I bought a few bags of this and I am surprised at how picky my hens are. Normally I just feed them protein mash, but I started mixing this blend in and noticed a lot of the extra add-ins being left on the ground, especially the pellets. I am sure it is good food, but apparently my hens want to stick to what I usually use. I will go back to the 18% protein layer mash once I get through the bags I purchased.
I like the idea of the alfalfa but my chickens sure made a mess of it. They always make a mess of food but this powdery alfalfa just got lost in the dirt and seems like they aren’t picking it up.
My chickens love it.
